Voice over IP (Internet Protocol) In short, VoIP means; speech over the Internet Protocol. Using VoIP, existing networks such as the Internet can be used to make telephone calls. In combination with a broadband subscription with a fixed rate, calls can be made much cheaper than with traditional telephone services.
VoIP uses the IP protocol to transport voice packets over an IP network. The Voice signal is segmented into frames and stored in voice packs. These voice packets are transported over IP and are compliant with the International Telecommunications Union-Telecomunications (ITU-T) standard H.323 . This is the specification for the transport of Multimedia (Voice, Data and Video) over a network. The functionality of a telephone exchange with VoIP is often provided by the SIP Protocol.
Besides the fact that calls can be made between two VoIP parties, there are now also options for calling traditional telephones via VoIP, and vice versa. It is possible to build a bridge between these two different systems. Due to the integration with traditional telephony, VoIP is increasingly becoming a suitable alternative for this.
In the late 1960s, a group of ambitious developers led by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson were seeking to create an operating system for mini computers known as PDP-7. This was done in order imitate what they saw on mainframes which had many features including multitasking capabilities but not one that could be used interactively. They called their creation Unix after another name previously given out by AT&T, Multiplexed Information and Computing Service.
